As a taxi driver, I’ve had all sorts of passengers—businessmen on Bluetooth calls, heartbroken lovers crying into their takeaway kebabs, and the occasional person who makes me question my entire existence.

And then there was Yasmine, the former cult member.

She got into my cab looking like she had just made a life-altering decision. Which, as it turns out, she had.

“Where to?” I asked.

She exhaled dramatically. “Anywhere that isn’t here.”

I raised an eyebrow. “I’m a taxi, not a witness protection program.”

She let out a laugh. “Fair enough. Just the city will do.”

We started driving, and she stared out the window like a woman in a dramatic indie film. I figured she’d spill whatever was on her mind eventually, so I waited.

Sure enough, a few minutes later, she sighed and said, “I just left a cult.”
