The town festival was something we had always looked forward to. It was one of the rare events that truly brought the community together, with food stalls, live music, and a general sense of easygoing celebration. Lara and I had been bringing Leo since he was a baby, and this year, now that he was old enough to fully enjoy it, he was practically vibrating with excitement.

"Mum, can I get fairy floss? And ride the Ferris wheel? And play that game where you throw rings onto the bottles?" Leo asked in one breath as we walked through the entrance, his tiny hand gripping mine.

"We just got here, buddy," Lara laughed. "One thing at a time. Let’s start with finding something to eat before you get a sugar rush."

Leo groaned dramatically but let himself be led toward the food stalls. The smell of sizzling sausages, freshly popped popcorn, and warm cinnamon donuts filled the air. Everything felt exactly as it should—lively, warm, and welcoming.

And then it didn’t.

The first sign was subtle. A few people glanced at us and then quickly looked away, some muttering to whoever they were with. I had spent enough time in this town to recognize the difference between friendly curiosity and judgment.

Lara stiffened beside me. "Do you feel that?"

I nodded, keeping my voice light for Leo’s sake. "Yep. The town’s annual tradition of ‘not-so-subtle staring’ is in full swing."
